DISTINCTIVES: VDDW Side-By-Side Comparisons
- To appreciate what makes the VDDW approach distinct, it is helpful to compare it side-by-side against other related approaches. The VDDW is not exactly the same as any of these, although in some areas there is some overlap. The VDDW is superior because it rates well along all the sectors of comparison, while the rest of these approaches fall short in one way or another, thereby diminishing their comparative value. (To find out more about the various areas of comparison, explore the right-hand menu.)
- Briefly, here's how the VDDW stacks up against the following:
- 1. The ABC / BI Point Solution: VDDW excels on Degree of Integration, Scalability, Depth of Analysis, and Accuracy.
- 2. The Traditional Data Warehouse: VDDW excels on Degree of Integration and Ease of Use.
- 3. The Profitability App / Data Mart: VDDW excels on Accuracy and Organizational Buy-In.
- 4. The GL DataMart: VDDW excels on Degree of Integration and Depth of Analysis. The GL DataMart actually constitutes one of the core inputs to the ABC allocation engine, and is therefore an important part of the VDDW, though it is not really comparable to the whole of the VDDW. (See VDDW Architecture for more info.)
- 5. The ERP: Somewhat of an apples-to-oranges comparison, but in general, VDDW is an approach that achieves a superior Degree of Integration, above and beyond what you can get by simply going "out-of-the-box."
